OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES NOW

Sierra Leone: Debrugsal Debrugsal School & Orphanage

NEWS: Mrs. Rugie Marah, school founder, recently suffered a serious heart attack. After treatment in Ghana, she returned home to Freetown, Sierra Leone. With the help of generous donors, $1,900 was wired to her on 9/18 so that she was able to pay her medical bills in Ghana, get new medications, and purchase a return air ticket. Please keep Rugie in your prayers.

STUDENT SPONSORSHIP: for just $200 a year --55 cents a day-- you can sponsor a pupil at Debrugsal Orphanage School. Your generosity will provide education and other support for these wonderful children. For more info or to enroll in student sponsorship, email: riverhills@riverhillsumc.org

Mrs. Rugie Marah founded Debrugsal back in the late 1990's to provide for children in the aftermath of her country's 11 year long
civil war. River Hills Church is now a primary source of this school's support, along with Arlington Hills UMC in Maplewood MN; and Rosemount UMC in Rosemount MN. Funds are channeled through the General Board of Global Ministries and by wiring money through local services.
The project to build Debrugsal's first real classroom building has begun: Praise the Lord!

Your donations are greatly appreciated. Make checks payable to "River Hills UMC" and write "Debrugsal" in the memo space.

UMCOR assists typhoon victims in the Philippines

Philippines TyphoonCAVITE, Philippines (UMNS)—The Philippines office of the United Methodist Committee on Relief is working with its local partners, including Action by Churches Together and the National Council of Churches, to provide relief to the estimated half-million people affected by Typhoon Ketsana, also called Ondoy, in the Philippines. As of Sept. 28, 144 people were confirmed dead, and the toll was expected to rise. Immediate relief activities include the distribution of emergency provisions, such as bottled water, blankets, canned fish and rice. Donations for UMCOR’s relief work can be made through Philippines Emergency, UMCOR Advance #240235.

United Methodists respond to Georgia floods

NEW YORK (UMNS) - The United Methodist Committee on Relief is working with the denomination's North Georgia Annual (regional) Conference to assist with recovery efforts from massive flooding in 17 counties, caused by severe storms moving northeast from the Gulf of Mexico. The deluge resulted in at least nine deaths before the rain stopped. Cleaning buckets from UMCOR's Relief Supply Depots were ready to be sent to areas in need. Teams interested in volunteering for flood cleanup and repairs should contact the conference's call center at (678) 533-1443. Donations for United Methodist participation during the initial phase of recovery can be made to U.S. Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670, and placed in church offering plates or given electronically.

Make Malaria History

Make Malaria History

THE UNITED METHODIST RESPONSE TO MALARIA

United Methodists are joining forces with others to make malaria's grip on the lives of children and adults a part of history. The Make Malaria History campaign represents the spectrum of efforts United Methodists are supporting to eradicate this preventable and curable disease that kills at least one million people every year.

These efforts include the United Methodist Community-Based program that provides education, medication, and mosquito nets to prevent and treat malaria; Nothing But Nets, a United Methodist-endorsed campaign that channels funds through the United Nations Foundation for mosquito nets and instruction in their use in Africa; as well as the Inter Religious Campaign against Malaria in Mozambique.

Why is Combating Malaria Important?

  • Another child will die of malaria within the next 30 seconds.
  • The disease affects 500 million people worldwide; 90% of whom live in sub-Sahara Africa where it kills one fifth of the children under the age of five.
  • Children who survive may develop chronic anemia and neurological impairment.
  • Pregnant women are particularly susceptible.
  • Malaria consumes 40% of public health expenditures and accounts for up to 50% of all outpatient visits and 30 - 50% of inpatient admissions in some places.
  • Malaria is preventable and curable.

Nothing But Nets
Nothing But Nets is a United Methodist-endorsed project that supplies mosquito nets and training on how to use them. This project is operated through the United Nations Foundation which uses its network established through the Measles Project to distribute nets and training. For $10, a net and training on how to use it will be donated through the United Nations' network.

Initiated by a Sports Illustrated magazine writer, working with the National Basketball Association and UN Foundation, Nothing But Nets began its work in Nigeria and is expanding into other countries. Online Giving

WAYS TO PROVIDE DISASTER
RELIEF AND RECOVERY
How to Help

There is always a need for both HEALTH KITS, FLOOD BUCKETS, SCHOOL KITS AND MORE. These collections of everyday items help families recover during the early days after a major disaster. The health kits contain items such as a toothbrush, wash cloth, and soap. The flood buckets contain items like gloves, household cleaners, and bleach to help people clean their homes to make them livable again. School Kits provide basic tools for students to keep abreast of their educational needs.

For information on how to assemble and send these important items, call UMCOR Sager Brown at 1-800-814-8765 or visit UMCOR's emergency kits webpage. Send your completed flood buckets and health kits to UMCOR Sager Brown at 101 Sager Brown Road, Baldwin, LA 70514. You may also give a financial donation to to UMCOR's Material Resource Ministry, Advance #901440 to purchase cleaning supplies that the Depot staff and volunteers will use to assemble health kits and flood buckets.
